Croda Announces Economic, Environmental and Social Success in New Sustainability Report

Customer focused manufacturer of innovative, naturally based speciality chemicals, Croda, announces the progress they are making towards their sustainability targets as they address the issues most material to them and their stakeholders in their 2011 Sustainability Report out this month.

For Croda sustainability simply means doing business the right way by the environment, their people, those organisations they work with and the communities in which they operate. Their latest report provides an excellent overview of the economic, environmental and social performance that is seeing the Company go from strength to strength.

Along with exceptional economic performance during 2011, which led to their entry into the FSTE100 for the first time this March, environmental and social highlights included: • 4.9% reduction in total Group energy consumption;
• 9.2% reduction in total Group water usage;
• 42.9% reduction in total Group landfill waste;
• 78,500 training hours, covering 86% of the global workforce; and
• 32% increase in 1% Club time, their community volunteering programme.

The Company also increased its use of non-fossil fuels to 14.5%, with a target of 25% by 2015 and maintained its unique position within the chemical industry of obtaining in the region of 70% of its raw materials from natural sources.

"It is no longer enough to strive to be successful in traditional financial terms, businesses have to realise that their responsibilities are broader," says Steve Foots, Croda’s Group Chief Executive.

"We feel that through our emphasis on emerging markets and technologies, we are making our own small contribution to enhancing the capabilities of future generations, which is why we believe that Croda is at the very forefront of sustainable business," says Foots.

Croda’s underlying approach to sustainability is focused on establishing clear commitments and performance targets aligned to their material issues, which focus on the areas that are of most significance to their business and of most importance to their stakeholders. These material areas are the environment, health and safety, responsible sourcing, employees, corporate stakeholders and community.

Demonstrating their commitment within these material areas, Croda’s 2011 Sustainability Report outlines the objectives and strategy behind each material issue to ensure the Company can measure improvements against 2012-2015 targets and beyond.
