Cognis Care Chemicals at FormulaCare i-2010: formulation expertise for Asian and global markets
FormulaCare is a brand new formulators' workshop endorsed by the Asian Cosmetics Association. Cognis Care Chemicals used the event to demonstrate its technical expertise in formulation, and to launch two new concepts targeted at the Asian market:
In response to the growing demand from Asian consumers for improved natural looks, Cognis Care Chemicals introduced its “BB (Blemish Balm)” concept, combining the benefits of skin care products and decorative cosmetics. It supports fashionable marketing claims, such as “slim face line” and “light skin tone” benefits. This approach is based on traditional Asian ideas of beauty, while also taking into account the preference of modern urban consumers for convenient multifunctional solutions. It includes Cognis' latest emollients, emulsifiers and skin sensory modifiers.
The second formulation concept launched at FormulaCare was “Cold Process”. This is intended to help Cognis' customers improve manufacturing operations in several aspects, e.g. energy consumption. The concept is based on ingredients and blends which do not need to be heated during the production of cosmetic emulsions – an important advantage, since cold processing increases productivity, shortens production time and reduces energy usage.
New ingredients serving the wellness and sustainability trends
At its booth, Cognis also featured its latest ingredients for sustainable formulations with appealing sensory properties that support fashionable claims:
Cegesoft SB Organic is a natural, unaltered shea butter that is physically extracted from the nuts of wild-growing plants. It is Ecocert-certified as a 100% organic ingredient, and also meets the requirements of numerous other environmental certification bodies.
Also on display was Cosmedia Triple C, the first of a new generation of liquid cationic polymers for care products. This PEG/EO-free dispersion polymer has a very pleasant feel, and measurably improves the combability of both wet and dry hair. It is significantly more tolerant of electrolytes than conventional liquid cationic dispersion polymers, and offers superior viscosity in hair and skin care products.
Plantasil Micro is a transparent microemulsion that is made entirely from natural-source raw materials, yet still offers excellent conditioning performance – a combination that opens up new possibilities in the shampoo category. Based on a balanced natural surfactant oil system, it is easy to incorporate into clear formulations. It is also EO-free, and is Ecocert and BDIH-registered.
Cognis' Euperlan Green is the first plant-based pearlizing wax dispersion that uses neither ethylene oxide nor amine as a feedstock. It gives an attractive appearance to hair and body cleansing formulations, while enabling them to fit with the trend towards naturalness and sustainability in beauty products. It is supplied in an easy-to-handle liquid form and is cold-processable.
Tried and tested solutions
In addition to these new innovations, Cognis also displayed some of its well-established solutions, which have already been giving competitive advantages to manufacturers in the personal care market for some time.
For example, the “Crazy texture” range includes formulations for children and teenagers that make maintaining personal hygiene into an enjoyable experience.
Cognis' alkyl polyglucoside surfactants (APGs) help manufacturers to make their formulations greener without sacrificing performance. These vegetable-based ingredients are ideal for mild, environmentally sound personal care formulations with excellent cleansing properties. The Green Chemical Solutions (GCS) classification system allows customers to see at a glance exactly how natural the individual ingredients in the Cognis Care Chemicals range are. It also quantifies the naturalness and performance of complete formulations – making it much easier for manufacturers to develop new products that meet the needs of specific consumer groups.
