NYSCC Suppliers` Day Embracing Beauty

Interview with Susanna Fernandes, Chair at
NYSCC

Susanna, it`s been challenging times for all event organizers worldwide. The NYSCC Suppliers`Day is one of the first large events for Personal Care Ingredients worldwide after the pandemic related stop for over a year.  What are your safety arrangements for the show?

It certainly has been challenging and, as you know still evolving, planning an in-person event this year.  Currently the city of New York has issued full vaccinations for attendees at large scale indoor events, including those that take place in convention centers.  However, the Javits Center is a state run building and we are still awaiting the issuance of its own guidelines and mandates regarding vaccinations and if necessary testing.

The Javits Center has also received GBAC STAR Facility Accreditation in recognition of enhanced venue health and safety measures. Established by the Global Biorisk Advisory Council (a division of ISSA, the worldwide cleaning industry association) the GBAC STAR™ program establishes requirements to support venue work practices, protocols, procedures, and systems that minimize risks associated with infectious agents such as COVID-19

By abiding by the recommended health and safety guidelines in place at the time of the event, and current mask mandate in place at the Javits Center, we are confident that Suppliers’ Day will offer the safest environment to conduct business.

As Suppliers’ Day is moving forward with an in-person event, tell us what attendees can expect:

This year’s theme is Embracing Beauty and will be a celebration of what we create.   It will also focus on overcoming challenges and formulating for inclusivity and diversity, while inspiring creativity and novel product development.  NYSCC Suppliers’ Day will also offer more than 30 hours of educational programming on the topics that are most pressing to those involved in formulations, sourcing, and marketing beauty and personal care products including:

  • INDIE 360
  • Formulating for Inclusion
  • Fragrance: The Invisible Art with a Fragrance Creator’s Association Panel
  • Back to Powerful Beauty with Peclers
  • Formulating & Preserving Clean & Natural Beauty
  • Core Suppliers’ Day Programs: Digital Age of Beauty, Discover Sustainability, World of Chemistry, and a Regulatory and Compliance Update

With your plans on course for an in-person event, can you tell us a little about the exhibit floor?

We do expect about 400 companies exhibiting at the Javits Center on November 10th and 11th.  They will be showcasing new ingredients and formulations, services and technologies, with some debuting in North America at Suppliers’ Day for the first time.

New for this year will be a curated Indie Pavilion on the show floor that will feature independent brands showcasing their “finished products,” and a “people’s choice” vote by attendees. The Indie Pavilion will be sponsored by suppliers and contract manufacturers who have accelerator programs specifically tailored to these emerging companies.

The Presentation Theater, Future Chemists Workshop, and Mentor/Mentee Programs will also take place on the exhibit floor.

Because of travel restrictions still in place for many overseas companies, we will not have as robust non-US participation as Suppliers’ Day has enjoyed in the past.  However we anticipate that 20 to 30 of these companies will have a virtual presence.

How many visitors do you expect?

The trend in US B2B events that have taken place so far in 2021, is that they have attracted 60-70% of their previous attendance and Suppliers’ Day anticipates the same.   With New York being a hub for the beauty business, we have always had a strong draw from the region, however we of course anticipate a decrease in non-US participation. We do expect to reach this global audience through the virtual component.

Are you planning a hybrid version?

Yes, we are very excited about our virtual component that kicks-off on November 12th. This will literally be an immersive experience with attendees feeling like they entered the Javits Convention Center in NYC and will give them a 360 degree view of the actual exhibits and expo floor from their desktops or mobile devices.

We also have a platform that makes it easy for exhibitors to provide the same assets and product information for both the live event and virtual.  Exhibitors who are virtual only will also have a presence in the LIVE EVENT that will allow attendees to “visit” them from the show floor via a QR code and get a glimpse of their new products and more – while also being able to set appointments for the virtual day on November 12th.

Some of the educational programs offered on November 10th and 11th will also be available on November 12th and beyond for on demand viewing.

When will the 2022 NYSCC Suppliers’ take place? What do you expect from this event?

We will be back in our traditional timeframe and the scheduled show dates are May 3-4, 2022.  We anticipate that we will start to build back to the 2019 event size both in our show floor footprint with global ingredient and formulation suppliers and buying audience.   In discussion with fellow show producers, everyone agrees it will most likely be a 2-year process until trade shows return to normal.  However, having an in-person show this year in 2021 will definitely help us achieve goals set pre-pandemic!

Undoubtedly, people want to meet face to face again. Live communication cannot be substituted digitally. Yet, sustainability claims, CO2 reduction, time saving and last but not least travel budgets influence decision makers. How do you view the future of large international events?

Virtual does not and will not replace live and in-person in my opinion.  While digital communications and meetings enhance all we do and allows for expediency in response or problem-solving, it doesn’t replace seeing/feeling/experiencing new products, solutions and innovations.  In addition, we know for a fact that our members count on the education provided by SCC on a global scale.  Learning, sharing ideas and networking at these technical events fosters innovation.  We’re so fortunate that we are guided by those intimately involved in beauty and personal care formulations/ product development, and the consensus is that there’s just no replacing the experiential and in-person component.
