This Year the Successful HairS Science Symposium will Celebrate a Premiere. The 24th Hair’S Symposium will be Organised by the "Hair Treatment" Expert Group from DGK e.V.

Interview with Dr. Jonathan Wood, Kao Germany GmbH, Director Hair Beauty Color & Perm and Dr. Bernd Nöcker, Kao Germany GmbH, Director Basic Research & Technology Development and Dr. Carl Uwe Schmidt, WELLA Germany GmbH, Director and Technical Expert
"Hair Treatment" Expert Group from DGK e.V.

What caused this change in organisation?

The HairS’ International Hair Science Conference has been successfully organised 23 times by the German Wool Research Institute (DWI). However, in recent times, the institute has changed the focus of their research activities from wool, hair, and (sulphur containing) proteins to interactive materials and became a member of the Leibnitz Association. This association is funded by the German government. Due to the change in focus DWI decided to discontinue the engagement in hair research.

Fortunately, most of the members of the Hair Scientific Committee are active members of the DGK e.V. / Expert Group "Hair Treatments". This group is highly motivated to ensure the continuation of the tradition of the HairS’ and requested the patronage of the DGK.

Thanks to the DGK and the DGK eVent GmbH we can offer the 24th Hair'S in 2025. We are really looking forward to keep this highly valued tradition alive. We would like to thank also DWI for all their effort in the last 23 conferences and their support in a smooth transition from DWI to DGK.

What is the focus of this event?

Main focus of the event is the visible part of the human hair, these scientists are sometimes called "members of the dead hair club". A wide range of all the aspects how to analyze and change of properties of this highly interesting and often very challenging bio material will be presented and discussed.

In addition, techniques and methods sued to characterize and understand hair in a better way are part of the conference.

Also lectures about new treatments and technologies for advancing hair care can be heard.

Last but not least the community has a deep interest in the living part of the hair - so  knowledge from inside the follicle will also be discussed.

An assortment of companies who deliver equipment or services for the hair industry will present their products and services.

Can you point out a special highlight/key presentation?

Next Conference we will have 4 Key-Note lecturers covering all aspects of the conference such as hair structure, genetics, interaction of hair with scalp, and the measurement of hair properties. As with the Symposium’s participants, the speakers/presenters hail from all over the globe: USA, New Zealand, Asia e.g. Japan, and Europe. I am (we are) extremely excited to hear and learn about the latest news in hair science!

In addition to the oral presentations, what else can the delegates expect?

The culture of the conference is one of openness. All participants have the opportunity to engage in discussions and exchange ideas with one another in a relaxed and informal manner, regardless of whether they are renowned experts or newcomers. It is the science that unites us– that is what counts.

You have chosen Augsburg as the venue. Can you share a highlight of the social event?

It is tradition of the conference not to have a fixed conference location, we travel around in Germany and sometimes also in the neighbourhood countries. Typically, we select locations that are historically interesting, such as Maastricht (home to the Maastricht treaties which built the EU) or inspiring landscapes like Schluchsee always aiming to engage and nurture the human spirit. This also brings a cultural aspect to the conference participants from all over the world and opens the mind for new inspirations. Augsburg has a history that spans more than 2000-years, and a very long tradition of diverse and tolerant mindsets. It is a city of peace and freedom – since 1650 the city has been committed to live peacefully with each other. In addition to that Augsburg has a lot of precious historical monuments, one of them is the legendary “Fuggerei” – the oldest social living institution in the world, established in 1521.
