Cosmetics Cluster UK is pleased to announce that it is now an independent registered charitable company - Cosmetics Cluster UK Ltd (CCUK), beginning a new phase in the evolution of the Cluster in its desire to be a ‘network of networks’.

The Covid-19 pandemic delayed the official launch until now, but the new board of Dr Gill Westgate, Jane Evison, Alastair Gardner and Lisa Buck has been working in the background to develop a strong plan to meet the needs of the industry, focussing on four key pillars of activity:

  • networking & international clusters;
  • education & workforce skills;
  • sustainability;
  • research & innovation

Whilst in-person events remain suspended due to the restrictions of the Covid-19 situation, work is nevertheless ongoing with several projects, including the Education and Skills White Paper in collaboration with a number of  industry associations; participation in a series of webinars mapping the beauty industry situation in the world, which is co-ordinated by the Global Cosmetic Clusters group of which we are a member; and a new collaboration with National Biofilms Innovation Centre (NBIC) to attract companies to work with them in the area of oral health, further details of which will be announced soon.

CCUK was the first official cosmetics cluster in the UK, created in 2015. Its four new directors, Lisa, Alastair, Gill and Jane (https://www.cosmeticsclusteruk.com/meet-the-team) all benefit from a long involvement with the evolution of the Cluster since its earliest days and bring with them a wealth of experience, passion for networking and the connections to drive its mission to connect companies in the cosmetics industry to support best practice, collaborations and solve challenges together.

Board member Dr Gill Westgate commented:

“The cosmetics and beauty sector is hugely important to the UK economy and I am delighted that CCUK Ltd will continue to represent and serve its members, by connecting with the wider sector as the UK's first and only Cosmetics Cluster and in partnership with other networking organisations”.

CCUK Ltd – the evolution of the Cluster

CCUK Ltd owes its success and international standing to its foundation networking organisations, originally set up under the Yorkshire Forward regional development agency (RDA) in the early 2000's.

Jane Mockford and Lisa Buck set up Yorkshire Chemical Focus, a networking and training organisation for the chemical and process industries and in 2009 its partner Personal Care Programme was established by the team, under the leadership of David Elliott.

The PCP was the forerunner of CCUK, serving the cosmetics and personal care sector with networking events and attendance at the Global In Cosmetics trade shows, with support from Alastair Gardner of UK Trade & Investment, the forerunner to the UK’s Department for International Trade.

When the RDA funding ceased, YCF Ltd continued as an independent membership organisation, providing member networking, national and international events, training and specialist forums.

The idea of the UK's first official Cosmetics Cluster was introduced in 2015 by Gill Westgate under YCF Ltd, then as part of CATCH UK.  Jane Evison joined the team with a focus on education, skills and sector wide communications and helped deliver the Educations & Skills White Paper project.

2020 sees our latest evolution with the formation of Cosmetics Cluster UK Ltd, an independent not-for-profit company with a growing membership across the UK. Its four directors, Lisa, Alastair, Gill and Jane all benefit from a long involvement with the development of the Cluster since its earliest days.
