An Ashland chemist has received the prestigious Des Goddard Award from the Board of Directors of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists. Xin Qu, PhD chemist and global research and development lab manager at Ashland’s technical center in Shanghai, China, was presented today with the award during the 72nd Annual Scientific Meeting and Technology Showcase breakfast in New York City. 

The annual award recognizes the most innovative paper on the topic of polymer science related to cosmetics or personal care.  Xin Qu’s paper, “The Rheological and Skin Sensory Properties of Cosmetic Emulsions: Influence of Thickening Agents,” was published in the Journal of Cosmetic Science | Vol. 69 No. 1.

Dr. Qu received his B.S. from University of Science and Technology of China in1994, and Ph.D. from Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden in 1999, with a major in Polymer Technology. After graduation, he worked as Postdoc in Columbia University, New York for two years, and then worked in HydromerInc., New Jersey as Senior Research Scientist since 2002. In 2006, Dr. Qu returned to Shanghai, and joined ISP Corp. (merged with Ashland Inc. in 2010) as Global R&D lab manager – Personal Care in Shanghai Technical Center. He has published more than 70 articles in both international and Chinese journals, and US/Chinese patents in the areas of hair care, skin care and preservatives etc. 

Dr. Qu will also be present at the Avant Institute Symposium on Thursday, December 13, 2018, presenting his abstract “Predicting Skin Sensory Properties of Cosmetics by Instruments – from “Pick-up”, “Rub-out” to “After-feel”
