• Crinipan® PMC green promotes a healthy scalp microbiome
  • New plant-based ingredient performs equal to conventional actives
  • Suitable for use in various dandruff control and other scalp care products

In a clinical study, Symrise has found additional positive effects for Crinipan® PMC green, its novel, plant-based anti-dandruff active. The new molecule is as effective against dandruff as traditional ingredients, and also helps to promote healthy scalp. Application of the ingredient by test subjects with dandruff resulted in a healthier ratio of two dominant species of scalp bacteria. This finding is based on ex vivo samples, that Symrise researchers took from the scalp of study participants, before and after a 30-day application of Crinipan® PMC green. The substance is suitable for use in many types of dandruff control and scalp care products.

Symrise has incorporated modern research technologies on scalp microbiome into its clinical studies. Contemporary scientific literature reports that besides of the well discussed relevance of Malassezia yeast in dandruff formation, also bacteria seem to play a bigger role than assumed in the past. The ratio of propionibacteria to staphylococci on healthy scalp favors propionibacteria, while the opposite applies to scalp with dandruff. Symrise has now discovered that application of Crinipan® PMC green is supporting a favorable shift in this bacterial balance promoting a healthier scalp. At the same time, the researchers observed the opposite effect on the scalps treated with a placebo product.

The active also stands out with its innovative mode of action to target dandruff. Malassezia, known as one of the main causes for dandruff on scalp, activates the ingredient with its enzymes. Symrise has already demonstrated Crinipan® PMC green´s effectiveness in a clinical shampoo study, demonstrating comparable efficacy known from conventional actives like climbazole. Crinipan® PMC green is receiving a great deal of attention, for example by winning the renowned BSB Award 2020 in the category Most Innovative Active Ingredient/Scalp, Barrier, Redness.

“Consumers will be able to use an ingredient that is effective against dandruff as well as supporting healthy scalp,” says Dr. Florian Genrich, Senior Global Product Manager Skin Protection in the Cosmetic Ingredients division at Symrise. “We have once again proven our power to innovate, which we base upon more than 45 years of experience in the field of Micro Protection.”
