In recent years, ceramides have garnered significant attention in the skincare industry. These natural skin lipids have become the cornerstone of many beauty products, praised for their role in maintaining skin health and beauty. From 2018 to 2022, new launches featuring ceramides surged by 176%. Indeed, ceramides align with key market drivers such as sustainability, efficacy, and bio-mimesis.
The most common ceramides used in personal care products are ceramides NP, AP, NG, and EOP. Choosing the right ceramides, their usage levels, and combinations to maximise skin benefits can be challenging. Additionally, incorporating ceramide powders requires a hot process, complicating their use in emulsions and creams. Ceramides' poor solubility in water further complicates the development of water-based formulations due to their hydrophobic nature.
At Croda Beauty Actives, these challenges have been addressed with the SphingoCare™ range. DS-CERAmix-V™ is a liquid crystal lamellae formulation that delivers key stratum corneum lipids in optimal ratios. This O/W emulsion mimics the skin's lipid composition and includes biofermentation-derived ceramides NP, AP, and EOP, cholesterol, sphingolipids, and fatty acids. It combines and optimises the benefits of all three ceramides in one easy-to-use product.
DS-HydroCeramide50™ is a water-dispersible powder of ceramide NP using advanced micellisation technology. It features DS-Ceramide Y3O-HP™, a biofermentation-derived ceramide NP with an oleyl fatty acid chain. Its "solid lipid" micelle technology ensures an easy-to-handle, high-ceramide content product (nearly 50%) that can be used with lower heat processes. This product offers improved formulation stability and higher bioavailability than pure ceramide NP.
In vivo tests and clinical studies on these ceramides are available upon request.
