• U.S. Department of Agriculture confirms that Hydrolite® 5 green consists of 100 percent renewable raw materials
  • Ingredient made from sugar cane can be used in many cosmetic products
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has certified Symrise’s multifunctional ingredient Hydrolite® 5 green. The authority officially confirmed that 100 percent of the cosmetic active ingredient comes from renewable sources. Starting immediately, the product will carry the USDA Certified Biobased Product label. The substance produced from sugar cane byproduct moisturizes the skin, enhances the effectiveness of many ingredients in cosmetic formulations and improves the appearance, consistency and protection of cosmetics.

Products based on renewable raw materials make an important contribution to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions since they enable products based on fossil fuels to be replaced. Created in 2002, the USDA BioPreferred® Program aims to increase the development, marketing and use of sustainable products. The BioPreferred® Program also includes a label that shows the proportion of renewable raw materials in an item. More than 3,500 products are already allowed to display the label.

Hydrolite® 5 green has now successfully gone through the certification process as well. The multifunctional ingredient only recently entered the market. Symrise presented it to the public for the first time at the in-cosmetics Latin America trade show in São Paolo, Brazil, on September 19 and 20, 2018. The active ingredient made from sugar cane can be used by cosmetic manufacturers in many different applications.
“With Hydrolite® 5 green, we are making an important contribution to environmental protection,” says Najeeb Hakimi, Product Manager at Symrise. “By consistently focusing on sustainable solutions, we are taking responsibility for future generations.”

Sustainability promises growth

Consumers are becoming more aware of sustainability and are increasingly asking for natural products. This is especially true for cosmetics. According to a Persistence Market Research study, the global market volume for natural and organic personal care is expected to reach USD 22 billion by 2024. The figure is even higher with natural products in general. In 2016 alone, sales contributed USD 459 billion to the U.S. economy, as a study by the U.S. Department of Agriculture has shown. This represents an increase of 17 percent compared to 2014.

“The demand for natural ingredients in cosmetics is increasing globally,” says Najeeb Hakimi, Product Manger at Symrise. “Similarly, the demand is growing for multifunctional ingredients, since consumers want short, transparent lists of ingredients. Our multifunctional active ingredient Hydrolite® 5 green consists of 100 % Biobased content and offers our customers a renewable and sustainable alternative. The USDA Certified Biobased Product label underlines Symrise’s commitment to sustainability and transparency.”
