Lubrizol announces the launch of the first readily biodegradable ingredient in the Carbopol^® portfolio: Carbopol^® BioSense polymer, an innovative solution that meets the growing consumer demand for natural materials that combine high performance with premium sensory qualities. This naturally derived rheology modifier and sensory enhancer is ideal for formulating--from serums to lotions and light creams--integrating exceptional sensory performance that offers a rich and soft synthetic-like feel without stickiness or peeling.

Carbopol^® BioSense polymer is the result of partnership with Suzano, the world’s largest cellulose pulp producer. Responsibly sourced from Suzano’s certified eucalyptus forests in Brazil, this innovative ingredient merges outstanding performance with sustainability—setting a new benchmark for the beauty industry.  This readily biodegradable biopolymer has a natural origin content of 98%, is vegan and certified by COSMOS/ECOCERT.

Carbopol^® BioSense polymer has demonstrated enhanced viscosity in emulsions, due to its synergistic effect with fatty alcohols, glyceryl ester, and copolymer, as well as with various emulsifying systems. This synergistic effect shows a two to sevenfold viscosity increase compared to formulations without it.

This innovative biopolymer, which can replace silicone elastomers, offers significant softness. Expert panel evaluations determined that the ingredient matches the softness of silicone elastomers, without leaving any oily residue. Consumer tests also confirmed that Carbopol^® BioSense polymer matches the softness of silicone elastomers. The tests showed no statistical difference, highlighting that this biopolymer significantly enhances the richness and softness of emulsions, providing a cushiony, indulgent, and velvety application experience with a comparable after-feel to silicone elastomers.

Carbopol^® BioSense polymer is ideal for skin care, offering a variety of medium-viscosity emulsions from 500 to 15,000 mPa·s. When combined with natural and synthetic rheology modifiers, it enables the creation of a wide range of lotions and light creams. In sun care, it is compatible with organic UV filters and low amounts of zinc oxide.
