Consumers increasingly seek cleansing solutions that are more natural and milder. To achieve this, formulators often reformulate with a different (milder) surfactant, often more costly than conventional surfactants. This article introduces how a naturally-derived and readily biodegradable polymeric surfactant, Structure® M3 co-surfactant, can be used to achieve mildness by increasing the micelle size of conventional surfactant systems, without the need to completely reformulate which reduces costs and saves time for the formulator. Zein testing with and without Structure® M3 co-surfactant is used to predict the reduction in irritation potential in systems with three commonly used surfactant systems: Sodium Laureth Sulfate / Cocamidopropyl Betaine (SLES/CAPB), Alpha Olefin Sulfonate / Cocamidopropyl Betaine (AOS/CAPB) and Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate / Cocamidopropyl Betaine (SMCT/CAPB).
