Abstract

The modern strong chelating agents GLDA (glutamic acid N,N-diacetic acid) and MGDA (methylglycinediacetic acid) are quickly biodegradable and are not labelled as dangerous. They have the ability to bind calcium and magnesium ions, which bind most of the stains to the surface. These chelates are also able to remove hard water carbonate scales, transforming them into water soluble metal chelates and will prevent the inactivation of anionic surfactants by water hardness cations, which will greatly improve the detergency power.
