wesourceTM Launches ASPAR’AGE™, a New Healthy-aging Active Ingredient

Paris, France - March 21st, 2019
Seppic, along with its dedicated brand for cosmetic active ingredients wesourceTM, offers a new active ingredient from the red seaweed Asparagopsis armata, reducing the contagious aging.

Our skin is constantly under stresses, resulting in accelerate aging with visible modifications like wrinkles and firmness loss. Aging generates senescent cells, which are affected by functional & morphological modifications. These senescent cells release a “Senescence Messaging Secretome” also called “SMS” that affects neighbouring young cells accelerating their aging process, what we call the contagious aging.

The extract of Asparagopsis armata regulates the impact of SMS in order to reduce the contagious aging effect on young cells. ASPAR’AGE™ protects young cells from senescence induced by SMS.

By feeding on Asparagopsis armata, which contains Mycosporine-like aminoacids (MAA), sea hares (marine animal) develop an intraspecific alarm through chemical communication base on MAA. Using a bio-inspiration approach, Seppic investigated if the MAA might also provide skin benefit in a regulation of cell-to-cell communication, and developed an extract of Asparagopsis armata containing MAA, ASPAR'AGE™.

Seppic developed a new model of in vitro evaluation. Tested on this model, ASPAR’AGE™ is able to protect young cells from senescence induced by SMS, offering the solution to reduce contagious aging.

As a clinical benefit, ASPAR’AGE™ contributes to improve the skin appearance. In a healthy aging approach, what matters is not only what instruments might measure as a benefit on skin, but also what people perceive by looking at you. After a 28-day treatment, people compare the pictures of each volunteer D28 versus D0. Skin is perceived younger by people (1), which is also confirmed by instruments measurements (2).

Catherine KERN, PhD, Innovation & Development in Life Sciences, mentions: “Bibliographic review showed us the emergence of a new concept about contagious aging, meaning that senescent cells were able to affect young cells by Senescence Messaging Secretome, also called SMS. This allowed us to propose the development of a new model of evaluation.

(1) +8% of additional answers in favor of pictures D28 vs D0
(2) -13% of wrinkles volume at D28 versus D0.
