New developments for even more consumer relevant detergent testing

The main challenge for relevant detergent test methods is the right balance of consumer relevance, differentiation, and reproducibility. Finding an optimal balance today is not only of increased importance to support the development of environmentally friendly detergents but also to proof fitness for use under more sustainable washing conditions: High compacted environmentally friendly detergents must provide good consumer experience at recommended dosages and low temperatures also under non-optimal washing conditions to long-term establish sustainable washing habits. Only well-performing cleaners that are not overequipped with harmful ingredients are in the end environmentally friendly.


The most consumer near tests are obviously based on consumer panels. But resource efficiency requirements apply to detergent composition and washing parameters and to test methods which lead to well-established technical tests. Those have been developed to reflect consumer reality as close as possible while being reproducible, differentiating, and efficient. Those tests and materials have been optimized over time to reflect new developments, for example in food habits.


Now recent research results have been clearly indicating that soils present in consumer wash loads and machines are much more complex than reflected in today´s technical test materials especially Sebum-related soils and stains. Based on the increased knowledge of real “body-related” soil composition we developed optimized soil donor- and stain material for improved consumer relevance of technical detergent test. Materials will be introduced, and test results presented obtained with these new materials.
