Title: The Skin Microbiome and Cosmetics - Myths and Facts
Abstract: Our skin is home to billions of microorganisms: bacteria and fungi, but also mites and viruses dwell on the various landscapes of our body. The entity of all microbes is called the microbiome. Our skin microbiome is essential for maintaining the functions of our skin. It fends off pathogens and other unwanted intruders and keeps the skin smooth. An imbalanced skin microbiome leaves the skin irritated and prone to skin diseases like psoriasis, acne, eczema, and dermatitis. By contrast, a well-balanced skin microbiome is essential for health and – by extension – beauty. Because only a healthy skin can give a bright complexion. Cosmetics should not interfere with the skin´s microbiome. The industry already picked up the microbiome trend and promises to improve the microbiome without regulation and very often without scientific evidence. Claim substantiation remains a challenge in the field. Picking up the demand for Microbiome-friendly products MyMicrobiome developed the world´s first independent certification for Microbiome-friendly cosmetics and personal care products. We have a broad experience with over 300 tested products while working with big and small brands, including organic brands and ingredient suppliers. Our certification gives scientifically valid data for microbiome related claims in the cosmetics industry. The talk is going to present myths and facts around the skin microbiome and the influence of cosmetics.
