Abstract: The improvement of well-being through the use of certain ingredients and products is strongly demanded by consumers and industry. At the same time, there are often unanswered questions regarding robust evidence of effects from retailers and authorities. Using a case study, we explain how to successfully demonstrate psychophysiological effects in cosmetic products and raw materials or ingredients. What must scientific results look like to facilitate the creation of functional claims, such as „refreshing“, „motivating“, „calming“, „relaxing“?
We at the Fraunhofer IVV are conducting research to scientifically characterize psychophysiological effects. In collaboration with FAU Erlangen, we are investigating cosmetic products or raw materials/ingredients on specific use cases in bilateral and publicly funded projects. We have developed concepts for a standardized approach to investigate human sensory perception. Our research group studies the brain, behavior and physiologicial reactions of the test subjects - although one does not yet consciously perceive something, we can already detect physiological effects that determine the psychological perception of a product.
