Abstract: Since centuries, in ancient cultures clay, spices, semi-precious stones, etc. have been used to create bright colors in cosmetics. During the 1800s heavy metals like lead were used to make formulations even more vibrant and long-lasting. Nowadays, we find a huge range of cosmetic dyes and pigments on the market, like organic lakes, botanicals, and inorganic mineral compounds like mica.

Coloration in cosmetics serves different purposes: in decorative cosmetics coloration is the primary aspect, with the goal to enhance our appearance and to underline our personality. Coloration in skin care products on the other hand, has a completely different intention. Here, the coloration is not supposed to last after application of the product.
