Abstract: The world is evolving, probably faster than expected. Accelerating loss of biodiversity and warmest years on record are observed phenomena. The United Nation Organization announced that we broke the 8 billion human beings on earth mark on the 15th of November 2022.
But how can we meet the growing demand for natural and effective solutions in cosmetics, while at the same time preserving our biodiversity, minimizing our demand for agricultural resources and our requirements for water?
The Plant Milking technology is a sustainable plant cultivation in soilless (aeroponics) conditions which allows to produce rare active molecules that are beneficial for the skin.
The aeroponic conditions provide multiple benefits, and the most obvious one is an easy access to the plant’s most hard-to-reach yet rich part – the roots - unlocking their deep-seated potential. Removing the soil as traditional source of nutrients enables further to selectively nourish the plants, in order to boost the content of active molecules and thus their cosmetic efficacy.
The easy accessibility of the roots and the gentle procedure allows us also to “milk” the same plant multiple times per year, making the Plant Milking Technology much less time consuming and much more sustainable, compared to traditional methods.
The plants are cultivated in greenhouses where high yields can be obtained on reduced surfaces, thus limiting the use of lands that can be dedicated to agriculture.
This strategy prevents potential conflicts of interests between nutrition and technical applications right from the start.
The water consumption can be reduced by up to 90%, and local production is ensured as the whole process, from plant culture to extraction, is done at the same place.
