Title: The Journey Towards Sustainable Homecare Preservation Across Different Product Segments

Abstract: Over the past years, consumers have become more and more informed about their everyday-use products and thus also increasingly conscious about product ingredients and their impact on health and the environment. This is reflected by a rising consumer demand for more skin friendly homecare products that contain ingredients from natural sources and provide an improved environmental profile. Supermarket shelves are already filled with several options for the consumer to choose from. However, while manufacturing industry is already blessed with a great choice of “greener” ingredients, biocides have not been in the focus so far – simply as not many options are available. We have therefore dedicated resources to addressing this gap: How can the consumer wish of an integrally sustainable homecare product be met? Which kind of preservation system can supplement the other natural, human and environmentally friendly ingredients already used? This presentation shows the process of finding a balance between the need for antimicrobial efficacy on the one hand, with the lowest possible impact on human health and the environment on the other hand. The objective is to develop a broad-spectrum effective product range that includes readily biodegradable raw materials from natural & renewable resources, which as a result are also eligible for Ecolabels in the consumer product.
