Abstract: Hydrophilic/Lipophilic Balance (HLB) or Critical Micelle Concentration (CMC) are some of the dark secrets of surfactant science: They are being covered in textbooks or courses about surfactant chemistry, but most experts in the field of surfactants are convinced that they are either useless or misleading. The activities of CESIO and TEGEWA Working Groups to eliminate such misconceptions will be discussed.
