The recent movement towards preventative health among the ever-increasing mature segment of the population has boosted the emerged success of new healthcare concepts such as biohacking. This one-health movement goes hand in hand with unprecedented scientific advances appearing in the anti-aging field, particularly for cellular senescence. So it is now the moment for the beauty industry to tap into the new opportunities the longevity era and innovation-eager mature consumer offer. In this regard, Provital is taking the lead in a new type of cosmetics that will leverage technology, science, and natural preferences to push the boundaries on efficacy and selectivity, while still supporting an environmentally friendly brand positioning: Dermohacking cosmetics.
Altheostem™, the first of our dermohacking ingredients, is a new well-aging active obtained from lab-grown stem cells of the flower petals of Althaea rosea. This eco-responsible biotechnological obtention method allows the preservation of the flower’s environment in nature, a full traceability of the raw material, and a production process that consumes less water, thus providing this active ingredient with superlative ecological standards and enabling its Vegan-compliance, COSMOS-Approved and 100% Natural Origin (ISO16128).
Altheostem™’s in vitro analysis is featured in the poster “Senolysis, a cutting-edge strategy for healthy skin ageing, is activated by Althaea rosea stem cells”, which was ranked among the TOP10 Posters at IFSCC Congress 2020. The study enabled the quantification of Altheostem™’s senolytic activity, by proving its selective and dose-dependent apoptotic effect on senescent dermal fibroblasts (HDF) vs normal HDF through various approaches (e.g., proportion of β-galactosidase-positive cells, ATP levels, levels of phosphatidylserine exposure and activation of Caspase-3/7). Moreover, the study quantified the positive outcomes resulting from this senolytic activity on the gene expression levels of relevant genes involved in extracellular matrix (ECM) remodelling.
Altheostem™’s well-aging power was also clinically proven on a panel of 70 mature women. The results of the many in vivo tests performed prove that this active significantly promotes a healthy glow, an elastic recovery, a decrease in skin sagging, a skin redensification and such a visible decrease in wrinkle depth and volume that the periocular area recovers almost 6 years of age. Furthermore, the Visual Apparent Age of the same panel was thoroughly studied in vivo thanks to a cutting-edge system based on Artificial Intelligence. This age estimation module consists of a Machine Learning system that, based on Image Data and a previously trained detection model, predicts the age of subjects through an ensemble of different convolutional neural networks (CNNs) that analysed 207 videos (223,560 images), thus proving that the apparent age decreases by over 3 years when treated with Altheostem™ vs when treated with placebo.
All in all, the newest biotech ingredient by Provital, Altheostem™, appears as an undeniable ‘dermohacker’ whose senolytic action will trigger a visible and significant improvement on aging skin.
